Dr. Jeff Coulton is an Associate Professor in the School of Accounting, Auditing and Taxation at the UNSW Business School. He serves as the Media & External Relations Co-ordinator for the School of Accounting. With a diverse academic background spanning economics, law, and accounting, Dr. Coulton brings a multidisciplinary perspective to his research and teaching. His professional experience includes work as a corporate lawyer at Corrs Chambers Westgarth and as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of NSW. He is also a Chartered Accountant (CA) and has served as an expert witness in accounting and stock market cases in the Federal Court of Australia and NSW Supreme Court. Dr. Coulton's educational background includes: PhD from UNSW (2005) B.Economics (Hons Class 1) from University of Sydney (2001) LLB from University of Sydney (1993) Dr. Coulton's research spans two primary areas: financial information impact on capital markets and space resource economics. His capital markets research focuses on how financial statement information affects market participants, with specific interests in dividend policy, earnings quality, and accounting quality. His space research examines the technical and economic feasibility of space exploration and resource utilization on the Moon and Mars. This unique combination of traditional accounting research with cutting-edge space economics makes his work particularly distinctive in the academic community. Analysis of Dr. Coulton's recent publications reveals a strong trend toward interdisciplinary research combining accounting principles with space resource economics. While maintaining his expertise in traditional accounting topics like audit quality and financial reporting, he has increasingly focused on the economic aspects of lunar and Martian resource utilization. His work bridges the gap between financial analysis and space exploration, examining questions of investment hurdle rates, royalty systems for space resources, and feasibility studies for commercial space mining operations. Dr. Coulton has secured numerous research grants throughout his career: NASA's Caltech - Jet Propulsion Laboratory grant for Mining on Mars ($100,000) Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia Research Grant ($8,934.88) CIFR Research Grant for Non-GAAP Reporting ($150,000) Multiple Accounting and Finance Association of Australia and New Zealand Grants Capital Markets CRC funding ($380,440) Dr. Coulton has supervised PhD students including Damon Ellender from the Faculty of Engineering. He has designed and delivered Executive Education programs to federal government departments and numerous public and private sector organizations for over a decade. His teaching focuses on Financial Statement Analysis at undergraduate, postgraduate, and MBA levels, including the AGSM9138 Financial Analysis, ACCT3610 Business Analysis and Valuation, and ACCT3601 Global Financial Reporting and Analysis courses. Dr. Coulton is actively engaged with the media and public discourse, having published articles in The Conversation and Business Think. He has also appeared as an expert witness in legal cases involving accounting and stock market issues, demonstrating the real-world impact of his research.
