Professor Lee Kang-hwa serves as Professor of Painting in the Painting Department at Sejong University's College of Arts and Physical Education, maintaining an active studio practice while teaching courses including Plastic Technique 2 and Graduation Projects. His career spans over four decades with 41 solo exhibitions and extensive participation in national/international group shows. His academic foundation includes: Graduation from Incheon Bupyeong High School (1980) Bachelor's degree in Western Painting, Seoul National University College of Fine Arts (1988) Bachelor of Fine Arts in Plastic Arts, University of Paris VIII (1993) Master's degree in Plastic Arts, University of Paris VIII (1994) Lee's artistic research centers on figurative interpretations of natural elements—particularly thistles, earth, water, and grass—using oil and mixed media to explore resilience, memory, and philosophical simplicity. His work bridges Korean sensibilities with Western techniques developed during his Parisian training, often incorporating symbolic botanical motifs to convey existential themes. Recent decades show increasing focus on rhythmic compositions and memory visualization through large-scale series. Analysis of his 2019-2024 output reveals consistent thematic evolution: natural motifs progressively intertwine with temporal concepts ("Emergency," "New Beginning"), while maintaining technical mastery in oil painting. His "Thistle" series demonstrates sophisticated symbolic layering, transforming botanical subjects into metaphors for cultural endurance. The works consistently engage with Korean contemporary art discourse while referencing universal human experiences. His artistic contributions have been recognized through: 2001 SongEun Art Award 2015 Korea Figurative Art Festival Excellence Award Professor Lee actively shapes Korea's art ecosystem as judge for the Republic of Korea Art Competition, Incheon/Daejeon Metropolitan City Art Competitions, and numerous regional festivals. His studio practice at Sejong University functions as both creative laboratory and pedagogical model, with recent solo exhibitions like "Blue Smoke" demonstrating continued artistic innovation.
