Jun.-Prof. Dr. Edoardo Milana is a Principal Investigator at the Cluster of Excellence livMatS and the Freiburg Center for Interactive Materials and Bioinspired Technologies (FIT), University of Freiburg. He leads projects on 'Inflatable Snapping Metamaterials for Next Generation Soft Machines' and 'SNAPVALVE - Soft snap-through electromechanical valves for autonomous soft machines.' His research focuses on soft robotics, biomimetics, microfabrication, and mechanics, with emphasis on metamaterials for actuation and sensing. Current positions include leadership in livMatS and FIT, where he oversees the 'Demonstratoren' (demonstrators) unit. He supervises doctoral researcher Xin Li and postdoc Dr. Hugo Oliveira. His work bridges mechanical engineering, material science, and robotics, addressing challenges in autonomous systems and bioinspired design. Key projects include METAINFLATE for morphological control and SNAPVALVE for valve innovation. His lab develops monolithic meta-origami actuators, symmetry-breaking metamaterials, and proprioceptive sensors. Research outputs span journals like Science Robotics and Advanced Intelligent Systems , with a focus on nonlinear inflatable systems and biomimetic applications.
