Professor Kristof Hoorelbeke is a prominent researcher at Ghent University (UGent) specializing in clinical psychology and cognitive neuroscience. With over 70 publications spanning from 2014 to 2025, his work has significantly contributed to understanding depression, rumination, and cognitive processes. He maintains extensive collaborations, most notably with Ernst Koster (57 joint publications), establishing himself as a key figure in depression research and cognitive intervention development. Hoorelbeke's research primarily focuses on the cognitive mechanisms underlying depression and related disorders. His work employs innovative methodologies including network analysis, experience sampling methods, and cognitive training interventions. Key areas of investigation include: The role of cognitive control in depression vulnerability and recovery Network approaches to understanding depression and rumination Development and evaluation of cognitive control training interventions Emotion regulation processes in depressive disorders The impact of digital media on mental health His recent work demonstrates a clear trajectory toward personalized and targeted interventions for depression prevention and treatment. The 15 most recent publications show a strong emphasis on network analysis approaches, cognitive training efficacy, and understanding the temporal dynamics of cognitive processes in depression. This research program bridges basic cognitive science with clinical applications, aiming to develop more effective interventions for depressive disorders. Professor Hoorelbeke has successfully supervised at least one PhD student to completion (Yannick Vander Zwalmen, 2024) and appears to be actively involved in multiple research projects and collaborations across Ghent University. His work has been published in high-impact journals including Journal of Affective Disorders, Behaviour Research and Therapy, and Frontiers in Public Health.
