Avidit Acharya is a Professor of Political Science at Stanford University, with courtesy appointments as Professor of Political Economy at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution. His research focuses on political economy and formal political theory, exploring themes such as historical institutional legacies, international state systems, and electoral dynamics. He earned a PhD in Political Economy from Princeton University (2012) and a BA in Economics and Mathematics from Yale University (2006). Before joining Stanford, he taught at the University of Rochester's economics and political science departments. His research interests include comparative politics, international relations, and political methodology. Notable works include Deep Roots: How Slavery Still Shapes Southern Politics (2018) and The Cartel System of States: An Economic Theory of International Politics (2023). His articles span political economy, formal theory, and applied methodology, with awards including the Elinor Ostrom best paper award and the Gosnell Prize. He serves as editor at Social Choice and Welfare and advisory editor at Games and Economic Behavior .
