Sofian Merabet is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Texas at Austin, with a PhD from Columbia University. His work bridges socio-cultural anthropology, queer theory, and interdisciplinary studies of the Muslim world. Affiliated with the Center for Women’s and Gender Studies (CWGS) Center for European Studies (CES) Lozano Long Institute for Latin American Studies (LLILAS) Rapoport Center for Human Rights and Justice (UT Law School) Research Focus: His interdisciplinary scholarship examines queer identity formations and the social production of queer spaces within class, religious, and gender dynamics across the modern Middle East (Lebanon/Syria), Muslim immigrant communities in Europe, and the Arab diaspora in South America, particularly Argentina. Courses Taught: Includes 'Arab Latin Americas' (cross-listed in Anthropology and Latin American Studies) and 'Decolonial Thought,' emphasizing ethnographic approaches to spatial narratives and diasporic communities.
