Dr. Michael J. Alicea serves as Assistant Professor and Interim BSW Director at Barry University, with concurrent faculty appointments at the University of Miami, Miami Dade College, St. Thomas University, and Florida International University. He currently holds the presidency of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Florida Chapter for 2024-2026, having previously served as President-Elect (2023-2024) and Vice President (2022-2023). His educational credentials include: Ed.D. in Counseling Psychology – Argosy University MSW in Clinical Social Work – Barry University M.A. in Marriage and Family Therapy – St. Thomas University M.A. and A.A. in Psychology – St. Thomas University & Miami Dade College B.S. in Criminal Justice – Miami Dade College He is additionally a Certified Law Enforcement Officer with 30 years of service in Miami and Coral Gables Police Departments, and a former U.S. Coast Guard Reserve Petty Officer Specialist (Gulf War Theater). Dr. Alicea's research and clinical expertise centers on trauma-informed systems , specializing in oncology social work , bereavement counseling , and behavioral medicine interventions . His work integrates culturally responsive frameworks for Latino populations and targeted PTSD care for veterans/first responders, demonstrated through court-ordered therapy groups (English/Spanish), trauma-informed home health services, and psychoeducational workshops on law enforcement stress and abuse trauma. His notable contributions to the field include: NASW-FL Social Work Educator of the Year (2023) NASW-FL Most Influential Social Worker of the Year (2022 & 2023) Barry University Adjunct Professor of the Year (2018 & 2019) Barry University Social Work Advisory Council Faculty Advisor of the Year (2019) Baptist Health System Social Worker of the Year, Bariatric Unit (2015) As an educator, he has developed trauma-focused curricula on crisis response and cultural competence across multiple institutions while serving as Medical Social Worker/Case Manager at Baptist Health (prostate cancer, cardiac, diabetes, and oncology units). His consultancy with Switchboard of Miami and Charter Behavioral IOP extends his impact to community mental health systems.
