Professor Olga Christopoulou is a distinguished academic at the University of Thessaly, where she serves as Professor in the Department of Spatial Planning and Regional Development. She also directs the Geographical Research and Environmental Planning / GREENPLAN laboratory and has held significant leadership positions including Department President (2013-2016) and Director of multiple Postgraduate Programs. With over 30 years of academic experience since beginning her career in 1990, Professor Christopoulou has established herself as a leading expert in sustainable development and environmental planning. Professor Christopoulou earned her PhD in Development of Mountainous Areas from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 1991, with her dissertation on ski resort demand and mountainous area development rated as Excellent. She received her undergraduate degree in Forestry and Natural Environment from the same institution in 1986, graduating first in her class. Her academic journey at the University of Thessaly progressed from Visiting Lecturer (1991-1994) to her current position as Professor (since 2012). Her research spans Sustainable Development, Rural and Mountainous Area Development, Natural Resource Management, Environmental and Agricultural Policy, Spatial Planning, and Sustainable Tourism. Professor Christopoulou's work frequently focuses on the Greek context, particularly examining rural mountainous regions, island ecosystems, and protected areas. She has developed innovative methodologies including Decision Support Systems for fire management, multi-criteria evaluation techniques for sustainable planning, and frameworks for assessing tourism carrying capacity. Professor Christopoulou's recent publications (2015-2019) demonstrate continued scholarly productivity with a strong emphasis on practical applications for environmental management. Her research output shows consistent focus on forest fire management systems, sustainable tourism development in island communities, and spatial planning approaches that balance development needs with environmental protection.
