Luis Padrela is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical Sciences at the University of Limerick and a Principal Investigator at the Bernal Institute and SSPC (Science Foundation Ireland Research Centre for Pharmaceuticals). He specializes in pharmaceutical nanomanufacturing, biopharmaceutical processing, and particle engineering. His research focuses on advancing drug nanoparticle production, continuous manufacturing, and supercritical fluid technologies. Education: PhD in Chemical Engineering (University of Lisbon, 2012), BSc (Hons) in Biochemistry (University of Lisbon, 2006). Research interests include pharmaceutical nanomanufacturing, continuous crystallization, spray drying of biopharmaceuticals, and supercritical CO 2 processing. He has contributed to optimizing drug delivery systems and overcoming scale-up challenges in nano-processes. Notable awards include the Bernal Mid-Career Researcher of the Year (2020) and the Innovation of the Year (2022). His work spans collaborations in academia and industry, emphasizing quality by design and GMP/GLP standards. He advises on the BSc Industrial Biochemistry program and the Professional Diploma in Regulatory Affairs in (Bio)Pharmaceuticals. His grants include funding from EU, SFI, and Enterprise Ireland. Luis leads research teams at the Bernal Institute and SSPC, focusing on advancing biopharmaceutical and nanoparticle technologies for enhanced drug efficacy and manufacturability.
