Patricia Gray is an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Plymouth’s School of Society and Culture, part of the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business. She joined Plymouth in 1998 after working at the University of Hong Kong. Her research focuses on youth justice systems, penal policies, restorative justice, and gender dynamics in criminal justice. She teaches modules on youth criminology, comparative youth justice, penal theory, and gender-related criminal justice issues. Gray’s work emphasizes the social and policy contexts of youth crime, advocating for child-centric approaches and systemic reforms. Notable projects include evaluations of Plymouth’s restorative justice programs and studies on youth custody resettlement. She has advised postgraduate students, three of whom successfully completed PhDs under her mentorship. Her research spans topics like imprisonment effects, neoliberal penal governance, and rights-based frameworks for youth justice. Recent contributions include analyzing Dartmoor Prison’s shift toward integrated restorative practices and assessing diversionary schemes’ impact on vulnerable youth. Gray has contributed to policy debates through evaluations of community interventions, such as LandWorks and the ‘Child First’ diversion program. Her work underscores the intersection of criminal justice, social exclusion, and equitable outcomes for marginalized groups.
