Søren Saxmose Nielsen is a Professor in Disease and Diagnostic Modelling at the Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen. He specializes in veterinary epidemiology with a focus on infectious diseases of production animals, particularly paratuberculosis. Dr. Nielsen serves as Chair of the Animal Health and Welfare Panel and as a member of the Scientific Committee in the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). Dr. Nielsen received his veterinary degree from The Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University (KVL), Denmark, in 1998. He earned his PhD in Veterinary Epidemiology in 2002 based on studies relating to interpretation of diagnostic test information for bovine paratuberculosis. He obtained his DVSc title from the University of Copenhagen in 2009 based on studies used for design of the Danish control programme on paratuberculosis. He also holds a Diplomate from the European College of Veterinary Public Health (awarded 2006). Dr. Nielsen's primary research interests focus on animal health and welfare, infectious diseases of production animals, and zoonoses. His work has particularly emphasized the diagnosis, control and epidemiology of paratuberculosis, for which he designed the Danish control programme successfully implemented in 2006. Current research projects include the impact of infectious diseases on animal welfare, health and welfare of unowned cats, animal welfare at slaughter, risk of disease introduction and spread, and uncertainty in diagnostic methods. His recent publications show a strong focus on animal welfare across various species, disease control strategies, and risk assessment methodologies. Dr. Nielsen has published over 190 peer-reviewed articles in international scientific journals, along with more than 80 professional papers and numerous conference contributions. His work with EFSA has resulted in over 150 international reports including guidance on methodology and development of legislation in the European Union. Dr. Nielsen collaborates with Danish stakeholders in animal production, the pharmaceutical industry, and animal welfare NGOs through the veterinary consultancy unit and research projects. He serves as Chair of the Panel on Animal Health and Welfare and the Scientific Committee in EFSA, receiving a salary according to EFSA's Expert's Compensation Guide.
