Brian J. Browne serves as Professor and Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, while also holding secondary appointments in Medicine. As Physician In Chief for Statewide Emergency Medicine Services, he transformed a small emergency room into a globally modeled clinical and educational program with 85 faculty members and over 50 residents across three tracks. His educational background includes a BS in Biology from Syracuse University (1974), MS from Niagara University and Roswell Park Memorial Institute (1975), and MD from SUNY Downstate Medical Center (1979). His training encompassed Internal Medicine residency at St. Vincent's Hospital (1982) and Emergency Medicine fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital (1985). Dr. Browne pioneered the Maryland Emergency Medicine Network spanning 14 EDs serving 550,000 patients annually and created Maryland ExpressCare, which transports 11,200 critical patients yearly. His research focuses on Emergency Cardiology, Stroke Systems, Health Surveillance, and Cancer Screening , with publications demonstrating innovative approaches to regional stroke care coordination and emergency department network development. His scientific contributions are recognized through numerous awards including the Research Medal from the National Foundation of Emergency Medicine (2019) and multiple 'Top Doctor' designations in Baltimore Magazine. Military honors from his USAF service include the National Defense Award (1991) and multiple Outstanding Unit Awards. As an educator, he received the Outstanding Teaching Award from University of Maryland medical students (2006) and the Master Teacher Award from SUNY Downstate (2009). His leadership established critical infrastructure including the Maryland Brain Attack Center and statewide emergency communications systems, significantly impacting rural and urban emergency care access across Maryland.
