Anel Jaramillo is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Kentucky, where she investigates neurobiological mechanisms underlying emotional affect and dysregulation in psychiatric diseases, with a focus on alcohol use and mood disorders. Her research bridges neuroscience and pharmacology, targeting neural circuits and peptide-based interventions to address negative affective disturbances during abstinence. PhD in Neuroscience (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, 2017) Postdoctoral training in transgenic mouse models (Vanderbilt University) Her work combines rodent operant behavior, in vivo/ex vivo techniques, and pharmacological interventions to study: Alcohol-induced interoceptive effects Stress-anxiety interactions Sex-specific neural differences Neurocircuitry in abstinence Recent publications highlight her focus on parabrachial-amygdala circuits, metabotropic glutamate receptors, and peptide targets like PACAP and CGRP. Her research explores how stress hormones, receptor plasticity, and neural pathways contribute to alcohol addiction and anxiety disorders. The Jaramillo Lab, supported by NIAAA R00 funding, aims to develop novel diagnostic tools and treatments for neuropsychiatric conditions through rigorous neuropharmacological and behavioral studies.
