Prof. David M. Moffitt is a Professor of New Testament and Early Christianity at the University of St Andrews' School of Divinity. He previously taught at Duke Divinity School and Campbell University Divinity School. His research focuses on early Christian understandings of Jesus in relation to Jewish scripture and practices, particularly through the lens of the Epistle to the Hebrews. He examines how Hebrews employs high-priestly and sacrificial imagery to frame Christology and soteriology, linking Jesus’ death, resurrection, and ascension to Yom Kippur rituals. Moffitt’s work includes influential books like Atonement and the Logic of Resurrection in the Epistle to the Hebrews and Rethinking the Atonement , which explore atonement theology and its broader implications. Teaching responsibilities include courses on early Christian texts, the Gospel of Matthew, and Hebrews. He has supervised numerous PhD students and received prestigious awards such as the Manfred Lautenschläger Award for Theological Promise (2013) and a Fulbright Scholarship (Germany, 2006–2007). His research has been published in leading journals like Journal of Biblical Literature and New Testament Studies . Moffitt also contributes to academic activities, including editorial roles and invited lectures on Hebrews and early Christian theology. His research extends beyond Hebrews to include studies on sacrifice in ancient contexts and the theological impact of Jesus’ resurrection and ascension. He collaborates with institutions like the British Academy on projects involving historical artifacts, such as Ravenna mosaics depicting sacrifice.
