Ving Fai Chan is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences at Queen's University Belfast, affiliated with the Centre for Public Health. His research focuses on global public health, particularly in eye health interventions in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), with an emphasis on child and elderly populations. He leads projects addressing barriers to eye care access, cost-effectiveness of interventions, and empowerment through vision correction. Key projects include the Zanzibar Arts for Children's Eyesight (ZANZI-ACE) initiative, which uses music to improve child eye health service uptake, and the WE-ZACE programme targeting presbyopia correction among Zanzibari craftswomen. His work integrates participatory action research, qualitative methodologies, and mixed-methods approaches to evaluate intervention outcomes and inform policy. Chan has secured significant funding, including grants from the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) and the Department for International Development. His awards include the College of Health Sciences PhD Scholarship and recognition as an Associate Member in his field. He has authored over 60 peer-reviewed articles, focusing on topics such as dry eye prevalence, school-based eye health programs, and the economic impact of vision correction. His advising and grants span collaborations with institutions in Africa, Asia, and South America, with a focus on capacity-building and community-driven solutions. He actively participates in international congresses and advisory panels, advocating for sustainable eye health systems and women’s empowerment through equitable access to care.
