Prof. Hanna Liss holds the position of Full Professor and Chair of the Department of Bible and Jewish Exegesis at the Heidelberg Center for Jewish Studies and the University of Heidelberg, Germany. She has maintained this academic position since 2003 and serves as a leading scholar in Jewish biblical interpretation studies across Europe. Her research focuses on medieval Jewish exegesis and commentary literature , with particular expertise in research on the Masorah in Western European biblical literature and modern Jewish Bible exegesis . She has established herself as a prominent voice in the study of the northern French exegetical school and Western European Masorah traditions. Analysis of her publication history reveals a consistent focus on the interweaving of religious, linguistic-exegetical, and philosophical cultures between Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Her work demonstrates particular strength in examining how Jewish biblical interpretation has evolved from the Middle Ages to the 21st century, highlighting both continuity and innovation in exegetical approaches. Prof. Liss currently serves as Principal Investigator for two significant long-term research projects: Corpus Masoreticum : The Inculturation of the Masorah in Western European Jewish Learning Culture from the 11th to the 14th Centuries Bible Glossaries as Hidden Cultural Carriers : Judeo-French Cultural Exchange in the High Middle Ages These projects represent major contributions to the field, securing substantial research funding and fostering international scholarly collaboration. Her academic journey includes studies in Bible Science, Judaic Studies, and Ancient Oriental Studies at universities in Tübingen, Jerusalem, Munich, and Berlin. She completed her doctorate (Promotion) in 1995 and achieved her habilitation in 2002 before being appointed to her current professorship in 2003.
