Dr. Ewoudt van de Garde is an Associate Professor of Clinical Pharmacotherapy at the Division of Pharmacoepidemiology and Clinical Pharmacology, Faculty of Science, Utrecht University. He also serves as a Hospital Pharmacist at St. Antonius Hospital in Utrecht/Nieuwegein and is board certified as both a Clinical Pharmacologist and Epidemiologist. His academic career spans over 15 years with significant contributions to pharmacoepidemiology and clinical pharmacology. Dr. van de Garde completed his pharmacy degree in 2002 and began his training as a hospital pharmacist at St. Antonius Hospital in 2003 while conducting doctoral research on lower respiratory tract infections. He earned his doctorate in 2007, obtained his epidemiology certification in 2008, and became a medical staff member at St. Antonius Hospital that same year. Since 2012, he has maintained a part-time academic position at Utrecht University while continuing his hospital work. In 2016, he obtained his clinical pharmacology designation and became a hospital pharmacy trainer. Dr. van de Garde's primary research focus is on understanding how pre-marketing authorization clinical trial results translate to real-world outcomes. He conducts efficacy-effectiveness studies primarily in the fields of oncology and inflammatory diseases . His current work also explores applying real-world outcomes data in shared decision making with patients and developing machine learning techniques to shorten the time to appropriate efficacy-effectiveness assessment. Previously, he established and conducted numerous studies to improve clinical outcomes in patients with community-acquired pneumonia. His recent publications reveal a strong focus on comparative effectiveness research across multiple disease areas. In oncology, he examines immunotherapy effectiveness in non-small cell lung cancer and treatment outcomes in bladder cancer. In infectious diseases, his work centers on community-acquired pneumonia management and antibiotic utilization. His methodological contributions include developing text mining algorithms for real-world data analysis and evaluating clinical decision support systems. Member, Scientific Advisory Board of Dutch Healthcare Institute (ZiN) Member, Scientific Advisory Board of Lung Foundation Netherlands (Longfonds) Member, Study Program Committee of School of Pharmacy (UU) Member, several task forces of Netherlands Society of Hospital Pharmacy (NVZA) Dr. van de Garde actively contributes to pharmacotherapy education within the Master's program in Pharmacy. He serves as chair of the Clinical Pharmacy course, is a member of the Program Committee of the School of Pharmacy, and conducts research on the selection process for the pharmacy program. He has supervised over 50 theses and co-supervised 8 PhD students. His research has been supported by grants including a ZonMw grant to investigate the feasibility of an infrastructure for research into real-world clinical effectiveness of pharmacotherapy, which led to the Santeon Pharmadatabase. His research group collaborates across multiple institutions through the Santeon network, which combines data from seven large teaching hospitals in the Netherlands. This infrastructure enables large-scale real-world evidence studies across various therapeutic areas.
