Professor Ulrich Walz is a Professor of Landscape Ecology and Geographic Information Systems at the Faculty of Agriculture/Environment/Chemistry at Dresden University of Applied Sciences (HTW Dresden) since 2015. He also serves as Privatdozent at the University of Rostock since 2013 and leads the Landscape Ecology and Landscape Planning working group at the Leibniz Institute of Ecological Spatial Development (IÖR) since 2011. His research focuses on biodiversity and ecosystem services, amphibians in cultural landscapes, landscape change and its environmental impacts, landscape ecological assessment using remote sensing methods, and indicators of landscape structural diversity. Professor Walz combines historical landscape analysis with contemporary monitoring approaches to understand landscape transformation processes. His recent publications (2022-2024) demonstrate strong output in landscape ecology, with particular emphasis on cultural landscape analysis, ecosystem service indicators, and spatial planning applications. His work spans empirical field studies, methodological developments in landscape metrics, and theoretical contributions to ecosystem service assessment. Professor Walz currently supervises research projects on historical landscape changes of the Königsbrück Heath, value of small-scale structures in agricultural landscapes for biodiversity, fire salamander monitoring in Saxon Switzerland, historical cultural landscape of Bornholm, and ecosystem service indicators development. He has advised numerous Master's and Bachelor's students on topics related to amphibian ecology, landscape structure analysis, and cultural landscape elements. His office hours are Tuesdays 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM by appointment via email.
