Ian Hudson is a Professor and current Department Head of the Department of Economics within the Faculty of Arts at the University of Manitoba, having previously served as Associate Head of the Economics and Society Stream from 2022 to 2025. His academic career centers on critical political economy, examining how societal power structures shape economic and political policy environments in North America. His educational foundation includes a PhD in Economics (1999) and BA (Honours) in Economics (1989) from the University of Manitoba, complemented by an MA from Carleton University's Patterson School of International Affairs (1991). Hudson's research investigates how social groups leverage economic power to influence policy, with extensions into ethical consumption, economic history, history of economic thought, and inequality. His methodology consistently employs political economy frameworks to analyze counter-movements against dominant power structures, revealing intersections between labor, health, environment, and neoliberal critique. His publication trends demonstrate interdisciplinary rigor across 15 recent works, with recurring themes of unionization impacts on health/environmental outcomes, provincial inequality patterns, and critiques of genetic determinism in socioeconomic analysis. The Canadian provincial context dominates his empirical work, frequently co-authored with scholars like Robert Chernomas and Myra Hudson. Hudson actively contributes through key research affiliations: Management Committee and Community Economic Development Stream Co-Chair for the Manitoba Research Alliance, Steering Committee member of the Progressive Economics Forum, and Research Associate at the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives. He currently supervises Master's and PhD students while leading departmental strategy. His research collaborations involve multi-institutional teams focused on economic policy alternatives, particularly through the Manitoba Research Alliance's community economic development initiatives.
