Reid Bailey is a Professor of Systems Engineering at the University of Virginia, leading programs like UVA in Argentina and Sweden, and directing the Rodman Scholars initiative. He joined UVA in 2006 after roles at the University of Dayton and Arizona, where he held the Lockheed Martin Assistant Professor title. He earned his BSE from Duke University (1995), MSME from Georgia Tech (1997), and PhD from Georgia Tech (2000). His research focuses on engineering design education, systems thinking, sustainability, and circular economy. He has co-authored Becoming a Technical Professional and authored numerous papers on design education and industrial ecology. Developed and leads study abroad programs integrating real-world projects with wineries (Argentina) and sustainability clients (Sweden). Created the Technology Leaders Program and the Lacy Engineering Design Studio, fostering interdisciplinary design. Mentored dozens of capstone teams and integrated real-world projects into first-year courses like ENGR 1620. His awards include multiple teaching accolades and recognition for education abroad work. He actively chairs conferences like the IEEE Systems and Information Engineering Design Symposium. Awards: Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award (2008–2023), Excellence in Education Abroad Award (2014). Teaches courses on systems engineering concepts, design evaluation, and global programs. His work emphasizes bridging education with industry needs, promoting sustainability through systems thinking, and enhancing global competencies for engineering students.
