David R. Klassen is a Professor and Astronomy Coordinator in the Department of Physics & Astronomy at Rowan University's College of Science & Mathematics. He serves as Associate Chair of the department and leads the MarsCloudLab research facility. His academic journey includes a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Wyoming (1997), undergraduate degrees in Astrophysics and Mathematics from the University of Minnesota (1989), and postdoctoral work at Cornell University. Dr. Klassen's research focuses on planetary science, specifically studying Martian clouds and their impact on the planet's water cycle and climate. His work combines observational astronomy using near-infrared spectral imaging from both ground-based (NASA-IRTF) and spacecraft (MRO-CRISM) platforms with computational climate modeling in collaboration with NASA research centers. His recent publications demonstrate expertise in Martian cloud mapping, spectral data analysis, and computational techniques for planetary science. The research shows consistent focus on understanding seasonal and interannual variability in Martian cloud systems through advanced image processing and modeling approaches. Joseph A. Barnes Award for Outstanding Service Award (2013) Professor Klassen has mentored dozens of undergraduate research students over his career, providing hands-on experience in astronomical image processing and analysis. His MarsCloudLab features dedicated computational resources including specialized workstations and access to high-performance computing clusters. He teaches across the physics and astronomy curriculum, from introductory courses to advanced planetary science, with emphasis on developing students' problem-solving skills and overcoming math anxiety in scientific contexts.
