Professor LIU Qingsong is a Chair Professor at the Department of Marine Science and Engineering, College of Engineering, Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech). He holds the prestigious National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars award and serves in multiple leadership roles including Party Secretary of his department. His academic journey spans institutions across China, the USA, and the UK, with significant contributions to the field of environmental magnetism and paleoclimate reconstruction. Education Ph.D. in Geology and Geophysics, University of Minnesota, USA (1999-2004) Ph.D. in Geophysics, Institute of Geophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (1996-1999) Master's in Applied Geophysics, China University of Geosciences (1993-1996) Bachelor's in Applied Geophysics, China University of Geosciences (1989-1993) Research Focus Professor Liu's research centers on geological applications of rock-, environmental-, and paleo-magnetism . His work investigates magnetic mineral properties across diverse geological settings, with particular focus on aeolian dust signals recorded in Chinese loess (reflecting Asian monsoon dynamics) and marine sediments from the North Pacific Ocean (related to westerly wind patterns). He has developed innovative approaches for constructing chronological frameworks for marine sediments and has made significant contributions to understanding striped magnetic anomalies in ocean floor sediments and paleoceanographic conditions of the North Pacific. His interdisciplinary approach integrates mineral magnetism with sedimentology, paleoclimatology, and geochronology. Scientific Recognition National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars recipient Distinguished Professor of Ministry of Education Aoshan Distinguished Professor, Qingdao National Laboratory for Marine Science and Technology Distinguished Professor, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) National Model Teacher (2019) Shenzhen National Leading Talent (2018) China 100 Distinguished Chinese Alumni Award from University of Minnesota Academic Leadership Professor Liu serves as Deputy Executive Director of the Paleomagnetic and Geochronology Laboratory at the Institute of Geology and Geophysics, CAS. He previously chaired the rock magnetism working group of the International Association of Geomagnetism and High Altitude (2011-2015) and directed the Sino-French Monsoon-Ocean-Climate Joint Laboratory. He has supervised numerous graduate students, with many receiving top academic awards including the CAS President's Special Award and Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award. His editorial service includes roles as Topic Editor for Frontiers and Guest Editor for Earth, Planets, and Spaces.
