Dr. Francis Szoka is a Professor at the University of California San Francisco with joint appointments in the Department of Bioengineering and Therapeutic Sciences and Pharmaceutical Chemistry . He serves as Director of Faculty Engagement and Awards and leads research in therapeutic bioengineering and drug development . PhD in Biochemistry, University at Buffalo, 1976 MS in Microbiology, University of Maryland, 1971 BA in Liberal Arts, Johns Hopkins University, 1965 His research focuses on liposomal drug delivery systems for cancer and infectious disease treatment, including FDA-approved Amphotec™ and biotech product Superfect™ . His group has published over 220 manuscripts and holds 35 U.S. patents. Key scientific contributions include sterically stabilized liposomes (Doxil™ technology), fusogenic peptide design , and bioresponsive lipid nanoparticles . His work spans gene therapy , macromolecule delivery , and immunomodulatory delivery systems . Fellow, National Academy of Inventors (2019) William M.
