Robert Stevens is a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Manchester, affiliated with the School of Computer Science's Department of Computer Science. He holds roles in the Bio-Health Informatics Group and the Information Management Group, focusing on interdisciplinary research in bioinformatics, ontology development, and semantic technologies. His academic journey includes a B.Sc. in Biochemistry, an M.Sc. in Biological Computation, and a D.Phil. in Computer Science. He has supervised over 10 PhD students, mentoring them in areas such as biomedical semantics, ontology engineering, and accessibility technologies. His research emphasizes managing complex biological data through ontologies, semantic web technologies, and e-Science frameworks like Taverna Workflow Workbench. Notable projects include TAMBIS, a bioinformatics integration system, and contributions to the OpenPHACTS and myGrid initiatives. Stevens teaches courses on ontology languages (OWL) and computational biology, emphasizing practical applications in post-genome biology. His work supports UN Sustainable Development Goals related to advancing health and innovation.
