Svenja Heesch is a Postdoctoral Researcher at GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, where she has worked since 2025 focusing on the taxonomy of marine macrophytes. Her research career spans multiple prestigious institutions including the University of Rostock (2021-2025), Station Biologique de Roscoff in France (2015-2018), National University of Ireland Galway (2011-2015), and Scottish Association for Marine Science (2009-2011). She leads research on the Prasiolaceae family within the German Research Foundation DFG Priority Program 1991 'Taxon-OMICS' and contributes to the 'Management Ecology of Marine Macrophytes' research group at GEOMAR. Dr. Heesch earned her Ph.D. in Marine Botany from the University of Otago, New Zealand (1997-2005), with a dissertation titled 'Endophytic Phaeophyceae from New Zealand.' She completed her undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Biology at the University of Kiel, Germany (1989-1996), where her diploma thesis examined 'Studies on the infection of laminaria by endophytic brown algae.' Her early career included research positions at MariLim Gesellschaft für Gewässeruntersuchungen in Kiel and the National Institute for Water & Atmospheric Research in New Zealand. Her primary research interests encompass Marine Botany , Phycology , Algal Taxonomy , Marine Biodiversity , Systematics , and Macroalgal Ecology . Dr. Heesch employs integrated molecular and morphological approaches to address taxonomic challenges, particularly in the Prasiolaceae family (Trebouxiophyceae, Chlorophyta). Her work frequently examines urban algal communities, polar marine ecosystems, and the evolutionary relationships within green and brown algae. Analysis of Dr. Heesch's publication record reveals a consistent focus on algal systematics with increasing integration of genomic methods. Her research spans diverse geographical regions from the Arctic to New Zealand, with particular attention to urban environments and coastal ecosystems. Recent work shows a strong trend toward resolving taxonomic uncertainties through molecular phylogenetics while examining ecological adaptations across environmental gradients. Dr. Heesch has contributed to significant international research projects including: 'SexSea: Linking genomics with life history traits in the brown algae' at Station Biologique de Roscoff 'Beaufort Marine Biodiscovery: Novel bioactive compounds from Irish marine organisms' at NUIG Coordination of DFG Priority Programme 1158 on Antarctic Research (2019-2021) Research on the Ectocarpus genome at Station Biologique de Roscoff ASSEMBLE project at Scottish Association for Marine Science Her current work at GEOMAR focuses on advancing our understanding of marine macrophyte biodiversity through taxonomic revisions and molecular approaches, contributing significantly to the field of marine phycology and ecosystem conservation.
