Magdalena Pfaff is a Doctoral Tutor and PhD candidate at Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS), University of Sussex, with secondary affiliation to the School of Psychology. She serves as student representative for the Network of European Neuroscience Schools. Her academic journey includes: Honours undergraduate degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences from University College Maastricht (Maastricht University), specializing in Human Physiology, Neuroscience, and Psychology Pfaff's research pioneers the investigation of cognitive-physiological interactions, specifically examining how belief systems modulate inflammatory pathways. Employing multimodal methodologies including MRI, EEG, physiological monitoring, and cytokine analysis, her work bridges cognitive neuroscience with immunology. Current projects focus on experimental paradigms where induced beliefs alter measurable inflammatory responses, revealing fundamental mind-body mechanisms. Her publication output demonstrates interdisciplinary reach, with a 2025 BJPsych International article analyzing hikikomori through transcultural psychiatry lenses. This work reflects her capacity to integrate cultural, psychological, and biological perspectives in mental health research. As an educator, Pfaff delivers tutorials across core neuroscience and medical modules while mentoring undergraduate researchers. Her supervisory team combines BSMS's clinical neuroscience expertise with the School of Psychology's cognitive methodologies, providing comprehensive research training within Sussex's integrated neuroscience ecosystem.
