Christoph Nolte is an Associate Professor in the Department of Earth & Environment at Boston University's College of Arts & Sciences and an affiliated faculty member at the Institute for Global Sustainability (IGS). His research focuses on conservation science, particularly evaluating the effectiveness of terrestrial ecosystem protection and restoration efforts through remote sensing and quasi-experimental methods. He teaches courses in environmental statistics, economics, data science for conservation, and environmental data analysis pipelines. Dr. Nolte holds a PhD in Natural Resources & Environment from the University of Michigan. His work integrates remote sensing data with social and policy data to assess conservation outcomes, costs, and spatial trade-offs. He collaborates with governments, NGOs, and early-career researchers globally, having conducted fieldwork in 24 countries across the Americas, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. His recent research explores socio-economic and environmental trade-offs in Amazonian protected areas, optimal conservation strategies under the 30×30 agenda, and the valuation of ecosystem services like national parks and water quality. He emphasizes data-driven approaches to address climate change impacts, land-use policy, and biodiversity conservation challenges. Notable collaborations include projects on flood insurance dynamics, agricultural conservation easements, and the economic implications of critical habitat designations. His work consistently bridges academic research with practical policy applications, aiming to enhance the cost-effectiveness and equity of conservation initiatives.
