Björn Schumacher is a Professor and Principal Investigator at the Institute for Genome Stability in Aging and Disease at the University of Cologne, affiliated with CECAD and CMMC. He holds the Chair for Genome Stability in Ageing and Disease and leads a research group focused on the molecular mechanisms of aging and genome maintenance. His research centers on the role of DNA damage in aging, employing C. elegans and mammalian models. Key interests include DNA repair pathways, the DREAM complex as a master regulator of somatic repair, germline-soma communication, transgenerational inheritance of DNA damage, and the development of biological age clocks like BiT Age. The recent publications highlight a strong trend in understanding systemic DNA damage responses, epigenetic regulation of repair, and the interplay between environmental stress and genome stability. His work bridges fundamental mechanisms with translational applications in aging-associated diseases and rare progeroid syndromes. Eva Luise Köhler Research Prize for Rare Diseases Innovation Prize of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia DFG Reinhart Koselleck Grant European Research Council (ERC) Grant Schumacher has advised PhD students including Najmeh Sotanmohammadi and Markus Doll. His research is supported by major grants, including ERC, DFG, and FP7 Marie Curie CodeAge network. He is speaker of DFG Research Unit FOR 5504 and co-Director of the Minerva Center at Bar-Ilan University. His lab, part of CECAD, investigates genome instability using C. elegans and mammalian systems, focusing on regulatory networks, stress signaling, and inter-tissue communication in aging.
