Dr. Yasodha Natkunam is the Ronald F. Dorfman, MBBch, FRCPath Professor of Hematopathology at Stanford University School of Medicine, where she serves as Professor in the Department of Pathology. She is also a member of both the Maternal & Child Health Research Institute (MCHRI) and Stanford Cancer Institute. Dr. Natkunam has over 20 years of experience in hematopathology diagnostic services at Stanford Health and Stanford Children's Health. Her educational background includes: AB in Biology from Bryn Mawr College (1987) PhD in Molecular Biology from Mount Sinai School of Medicine (1993) MD from Mount Sinai School of Medicine (1995) Pathology Residency at Stanford University (1999) Board Certification in Anatomic Pathology from the American Board of Pathology (1998) Dr. Natkunam is an expert in the diagnosis of hematopoietic tumors including lymphoma and leukemia. Her research focuses on refining the diagnosis and prognosis of patients with hematopoietic tumors, furnishing novel reagents, diagnostic criteria and guidelines for clinical practice. She studies the tissue expression pattern of proteins that are of potential interest for the diagnosis, prognostic stratification and therapy of patients with lymphoma and leukemia, with particular interest in prognostic markers in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma and the immunodiagnostic and molecular characterization of rare and aggressive hematopoietic tumors. Her extensive publication record demonstrates a strong focus on lymphoma subtypes, biomarker discovery, and immunotherapy targets. Recent work has centered on CD47 expression patterns, spatial phenotyping of lymphomas, and novel therapeutic targets like TIGIT. Her research shows an evolution from basic diagnostic criteria toward more sophisticated molecular and spatial analyses of tumor microenvironments. Dr. Natkunam has received numerous honors and awards throughout her career: Undergraduate Research Award, Charles A. Dana Foundation (1986) Medical Scientist Training Program, Mount Sinai School of Medicine (1987-1995) Weill Memorial Fellow in Cancer Research (1993) Shalit Fellow at John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford (2006) International Cancer Technology Transfer Award (2010) Multiple Faculty Teaching Awards from the Department of Pathology at Stanford (2016, 2017, 2019, 2021) Ronald F. Dorfman, MBBS, FRCPath Professorship in Hematopathology (2018) Dr. Natkunam serves as Co-Director of the Immunodiagnosis Laboratory at Stanford (since 2005) and has held several leadership positions including Director of Faculty Development and Diversity (2009-2018) and Director of Hematopathology (2009-2020). She actively participates in clinical trials related to lymphoma and leukemia treatments and teaches multiple pathology courses at Stanford. She maintains active involvement in numerous professional organizations, serving on editorial boards for major pathology journals and participating in expert panels including the Lymphoma Working Group of the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group and the Society for Hematopathology.
