Dr. Mark Hughes is a Reader in Physics at the University of Salford's School of Science, Engineering & Environment, where he has been faculty since 2015. He is affiliated with the Centre for Future Engineering, leading research in quantum technologies and advanced materials. His research program focuses on developing quantum internet technologies using erbium-implanted silicon, alongside investigations into solid-state electrolytes, optical amplifiers, and resistive switching memory devices. His core research areas include: Quantum networking architectures using silicon-based technologies Chalcogenide glass systems for optoelectronic applications Nanoscale electronic devices including carbon nanotube transistors Ion implantation techniques for semiconductor modification Advanced characterization of materials under extreme conditions Dr. Hughes maintains an active teaching portfolio across all academic levels, employing innovative digital pedagogy through dedicated YouTube content.
