Emmanouil (Manos) Kioupakis is a Professor in the Department of Materials Science & Engineering at the University of Michigan, College of Engineering. He leads a research group focused on computational materials physics and first-principles calculations of electronic, optical, and thermoelectric properties of novel materials. His work bridges theoretical physics with practical applications in semiconductor technology, energy conversion, and electronic devices. Dr. Kioupakis earned his B.Sc. in Physics from the University of Crete in 2001 and completed his Ph.D. in Physics at the University of California, Berkeley in 2008. Following his doctoral studies, he conducted postdoctoral research at the University of California, Santa Barbara from 2008-2011 before joining the University of Michigan faculty. His research interests center on computational materials discovery, with particular focus on ultra-wide-band-gap semiconductors, optoelectronic materials, and thermoelectric systems. The Kioupakis Group develops and applies high-performance first-principles computational methods to study the properties of functional materials, aiming to understand and predictively model materials for electronic, optoelectronic, and magnetic devices. Their work spans from fundamental electronic structure theory to practical applications in renewable energy and semiconductor technology. Analysis of Dr. Kioupakis's recent publications reveals a strong emphasis on ultra-wide-band-gap semiconductors (particularly rutile GeO 2 ), high-entropy materials, nitride semiconductors, and defect engineering in novel material systems. His group's work combines cutting-edge computational techniques with experimental validation, often in collaboration with other research groups at Michigan and beyond. The publications demonstrate expertise in carrier mobility calculations, optical properties prediction, and materials design for specific electronic applications. The group maintains strong collaborations with experimental groups within the College of Engineering, giving them access to state-of-the-art facilities for materials characterization and device fabrication. They also participate in major computational initiatives, including the development of the EPW code for electron-phonon calculations. The Kioupakis Group operates within the Materials Science & Engineering department at the University of Michigan, benefiting from proximity to experimental research groups and advanced characterization facilities. The group participates in the university's Scientific Computing program and collaborates extensively with researchers across campus, particularly in the departments of Physics, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and Chemical Engineering. They maintain an active presence at major conferences including the American Physical Society March Meeting and Materials Research Society meetings.
