Prof. Sonia I. Seneviratne is a Full Professor at ETH Zurich's Department of Environmental Systems Science and Head of the Institute for Atmospheric and Climate Science. Her research focuses on climate extremes, land-climate interactions, and human-induced climate change, utilizing climate models, satellite data, and ground observations. She has published over 200 peer-reviewed articles and holds significant roles in the IPCC, including leading authorship of the 1.5°C Special Report and coordinating lead author of the 6th Assessment Report. Education: BSc Biology (University of Lausanne, 1995), MSc Environmental Physics (ETH Zurich, 1999), PhD Climate Science (ETH Zurich, 2003). Postdoctoral work included visiting research at NASA/Goddard (2003-2004). Academic career milestones: Assistant Professor (2007), Associate Professor (2013), Full Professor (2016). Research interests include droughts, heatwaves, land-cover impacts on regional climate, and climate modeling. Her work emphasizes quantifying climate change effects on ecosystems and society, with a focus on compounding extremes and mitigation pathways. Awards: Honorary Doctorate (Utrecht University, 2023) ERC Consolidator and Proof-of-Concept Grants Hans-Oeschger Medal (EGU, 2021) James B. Macelwane Medal (AGU, 2013) Advising and grants: Supervises doctoral students in climate science and leads major research initiatives funded by ERC and international collaborations. Her work informs climate policy and adaptation strategies globally. Labs/Teams: Directs the Institute for Atmospheric and Climate Science at ETH Zurich, fostering interdisciplinary research on climate dynamics and Earth system interactions.
