Domenico Giardini is a Professor of Seismology and Geodynamics at ETH Zurich since 1997. He previously held roles including Associate Professor at the University of Rome III, Director of the Swiss Seismological Service (until 2011), and President of the Italian National Institute of Geophysics. He currently leads the Swiss Competence Center for Energy Research – Supply of Electricity (SCCER-SoE) and has directed initiatives in seismic risk assessment and research infrastructure development. Doctorate in Physics, University of Bologna (1987) Postdoctoral Fellowship, Harvard University (1982-1986) His research spans seismology, geodynamics, planetology, and gravitational wave detection, focusing on seismic hazard modeling, planetary interiors, and induced seismicity. He pioneered the use of seismic networks for hazard assessment and contributed to Mars geophysics through NASA's InSight mission. Key scientific awards include Presidency of the European Seismological Commission, Chairmanship of the Federation of Digital Seismograph Networks, and Honorary Fellowship at the Royal Astronomical Society. He has advised 65 PhD students at ETH Zurich and coordinated international projects for the UN, ESA, and NASA.
