Professor Matthew J. Sweet is an NHMRC Leadership Fellow and Group Leader at the Institute for Molecular Bioscience (IMB), The University of Queensland. Affiliated with the School of Chemistry and Molecular Biosciences, he serves as Director of Higher Degree Research and previously led the Centre for Inflammation and Disease Research (2014-2018). His work focuses on innate immunity, macrophage biology, and their roles in infectious and inflammatory diseases. PhD, The University of Queensland (1996) Postdoctoral training, University of Glasgow CJ Martin Fellowship recipient Research spans innate immune inflammatory pathways , antimicrobial strategies , and immune cell metabolism . Key areas include TLR signaling specificity , HDAC-regulated immunometabolism , and zinc/copper toxicity against pathogens . His 2025 Nature Reviews Immunology paper on inducible antibacterial responses in macrophages and 2024 PNAS work on CFTR-mediated zinc defense highlight translational impact. Scientific Awards include: NHMRC Leadership Fellow ARC Future Fellow UQ Mid-Career Research Fellowship His lab has trained 34 PhD students and 25 honours students , with alumni securing prestigious fellowships. Collaborations extend to chronic liver disease research with clinicians Elizabeth Powell and Ekihiro Seki, and industry partnerships with CSL Ltd. Current projects target HDAC enzymes for anti-infectives, TLR signaling for anti-inflammatories, and metal stress responses in pathogens. The group also explores organelle-mediated immunity and circadian regulation of immune responses through advanced imaging and single-cell technologies.
