Stephan Karl, Mag. Dr.phil., is a researcher based at the Institute for Antiquity , Faculty of Humanities , University of Graz . His work bridges traditional Classical Archaeology with cutting-edge digital techniques such as 3-D scanning, GIS and CT analysis. Academic Background He earned his doctorate in 2013 from the University of Graz with the dissertation "Turris antiqua in castro Leybentz. On the earliest construction history of the Leibnitz/Seggau castle complex in the context of the late antique eastern flank of the province of Noricum Mediterraneaneum." Research Focus Early Greek pottery (Geometric, Corinthian, East Greek) Roman stone monuments and marble quarries, especially the Spitzelofen quarry in Carinthia Digital documentation using SLS/CT/ALS/GIS technologies Late Antique fortifications and settlement structures in the south-eastern Alps His publications range from detailed monographs on Roman quarrying to comprehensive Corpus Vasorum Antiquorum fascicles that catalogue and digitise ancient ceramic holdings in Austrian museums, demonstrating a consistent integration of scientific analysis with archaeological interpretation. Awards & Recognition 2013 Erna Diez Prize awarded by the Historical Commission of Styria (Austria) for outstanding scholarly contributions. Project Leadership & Collaboration Between 2011 and 2022 Dr Karl has led or participated in several major externally-funded projects: FWF project “Crossmodal search and visual exploration of 3-D cultural objects” (2018-2021) FWF/ARRS bilateral project “Early Medieval Settlement Structure in the Southeastern Alps” (2019-2020) BDA projects on the Spitzelofen marble quarry area (2015-2016, 2019-2020) EU-ETC/SI-AT project “InterArch-Styria” (2011-2014), fostering cross-border digital heritage initiatives. Since 2016 he has served as referee for the Journal of Archaeological Science , and has been an active member of interdisciplinary working groups on Scientific Computing & Cultural Heritage.
