Alex B. Hill is the GIS Director and Adjunct Professor at Wayne State University's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, affiliated with the Urban Studies and Planning and Public Health departments. His research focuses on medical anthropology, urban studies, health geography, food access, and nutrition, with a particular emphasis on Detroit's food systems and structural inequities. He teaches courses such as Geographic Information Systems (UP6700), Public Health and the City (US3550), and Introduction to GIS (GPH3600). His work bridges anthropological methods with data-driven approaches, addressing issues like food sovereignty, racial justice, and health equity through projects such as the Detroit Food Map and DETROITography. Hill's recent publications explore food insecurity, urban health disparities, and the impact of structural racism on public health outcomes. He has authored books including Detroit in 50 Maps (2021) and Great Lakes in 50 Maps (2025), which critically examine urban and environmental landscapes through cartographic storytelling. His research also extends to emergency healthcare, pandemic response, and environmental justice, reflecting a commitment to interdisciplinary solutions for urban challenges. Key projects include the Healthy Community Stores initiative and collaborations with community health workers to reduce disparities in cardiovascular care.
