Thomas Baumgartner is a Full Professor in the Department of Chemistry at York University, holding a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Sustainable Organomain Group Materials. His research focuses on the synthesis and characterization of phosphorus-containing organic materials for applications in sustainable energy, including organic electronics (e.g., OLEDs, solar cells, batteries) and sensors. He leads the Baumgartner Research Group, which explores main-group chemistry, self-assembly, and Lewis acid sensing. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Bonn, Germany, and has received prestigious awards such as the Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award and the Alberta Ingenuity New Faculty Award. Key research interests include: Organophosphorus materials for solar energy and batteries Self-assembly of phosphole-lipids and supramolecular systems Fluorescence-based Lewis acid sensing (FLA method) Design of electron-acceptor materials for organic electronics Recent work highlights advancements in viologen-based electrodes, phosphorus nanocarbons derived from Vat Orange 3, and solvent effects on Lewis acid reactivity. His group collaborates widely, with projects funded by CRC, NSERC, and international fellowships. Over 100 students and postdocs have been mentored, many progressing to academia and industry roles. Awards include the 2021 CSC Conference Outstanding Presentation Award (shared with students), and the York Science Fellowship supporting his research on conjugated materials. Teaching roles span advanced inorganic chemistry, polymer chemistry, and specialized topics in materials science at both York and the University of Calgary. His lab is located in the Life Sciences Building at York University, and he actively engages in organizing international conferences such as ISNA and POMS.
