Simon Crelier is a Full Professor at the University of Applied Sciences Western Switzerland (HES-SO), where he serves as Head of the Biotechnology program within the Department of Chemistry and Life Sciences at the School of Engineering in Sion, Switzerland. He leads research in bioprocess engineering with specialization in downstream processing, enzyme technology, and microencapsulation. Professor Crelier's research spans multiple areas of applied biotechnology with emphasis on sustainable processes. His work focuses on waste valorization (particularly converting whey and fruit pomace into valuable products), micropollutant degradation using enzymatic systems, and continuous bioprocessing technologies. He has developed expertise in laccase enzyme production for environmental applications and created low-cost microencapsulation devices based on vibrating nozzle technology. His publication record from 2002-2021 shows consistent contributions to bioprocess engineering, with recent work emphasizing environmental applications of biotechnology. Professor Crelier has led numerous collaborative research projects within HES-SO and with external partners, securing funding from cantonal, national, and international sources. Professor Crelier actively integrates his research with teaching, having developed digital laboratory platforms through the Remote Labs project and incorporating student diploma work into his research projects. His laboratory provides students with hands-on experience in bioprocess engineering techniques applicable to the biotechnology industry.
