He serves as Co-Leader of the Advanced Hepatobiliary Disease Program at Yale Cancer Center. Dr. Khan is internationally recognized for superb clinical care and excellence in cancer research, with board certification in both Complex General Surgical Oncology and General Surgery. Yale School of Medicine - Associate Professor of Surgery (Oncology) Yale Cancer Center - Co-Leader, Advanced Hepatobiliary Disease Program Yale Center for Clinical Investigation (YCCI) - Co-Director of Team Science Hepatic Arterial Infusion (HAI) Program - Co-Director Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG) - Principal Investigator Dr. Khan earned his medical degree from SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY and completed his general surgery training at Oregon Health & Science University and Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Montefiore. He furthered his expertise with a research fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and a clinical and research fellowship at University of Chicago Medical Center. He is Board Certified in both Complex General Surgical Oncology and General Surgery. Dr. Khan's research program focuses on gastrointestinal cancers, utilizing modern molecular biology (metabolomics and transcriptomics) to improve understanding and treatment. His NIH-funded lab performs translational research exploring liver metastasis mechanisms, developing pancreatic cancer biomarkers, and identifying novel genomic cancer pathways. A distinctive aspect of his work examines how tumor metabolites and RNA expression relate to race/ethnicity and sex differences. His lab's research has resulted in over 100 publications in prestigious journals with more than 3,299 citations. Dr. Khan's clinical practice specializes in complex surgical oncology for tumors of the liver, pancreas, bile ducts, stomach, and colon, as well as melanoma and neuroendocrine tumors. He has performed over 1,800 oncologic surgeries at Yale Health System, incorporating a multidisciplinary team approach and minimally invasive techniques. His commitment to patient care extends beyond the operating room, emphasizing long-term relationships with patients and their families. He chairs the Society of Surgery of the Alimentary Tract (SSAT) Research Committee and serves on editorial boards for Annals of Surgical Oncology, JAMA Oncology, and Indian Journal of Surgery. His leadership extends to multiple professional organizations including the Society of Surgical Oncology, American College of Surgeons, and American Society of Clinical Oncology. The Khan Lab conducts both wet and dry lab research, focusing on translational studies that bridge basic science discoveries with clinical applications. The lab's work on oligometastatic disease aims to identify which patients with limited metastases will benefit most from curative therapies. Located at 300 George Street, 6th Floor, the lab collaborates closely with other experts at the Yale Cancer Center to advance the field of gastrointestinal oncology.
