Giulio Tiozzo is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Toronto, affiliated with both the St. George and Scarborough campuses. His research lies at the intersection of dynamical systems, ergodic theory, and geometry, with strong connections to complex analysis, probability, and group theory. Institution: University of Toronto School: Faculty of Arts and Science Department: Department of Mathematics Rank: Associate Professor Campus Offices: BA 6206 (St. George), IC 495 (Scarborough) Email: tiozzo@math.utoronto.ca His research focuses on dynamical systems and ergodic theory , particularly entropy in complex and real dynamics, random walks on groups, and thermodynamic formalism. He investigates the structure of the Mandelbrot set, core entropy of polynomials, and geometric group actions. His work combines deep theoretical insights with algorithmic and computational approaches, as seen in his exploration of Thurston’s master teapot and entropy algorithms. The 15 most recent publications reveal a sustained focus on entropy, fractal geometry, and probabilistic group actions. Themes include the continuity and computation of core entropy, thermodynamic formalism for expanding systems, boundary theory for random walks on hyperbolic groups, and metric properties of group actions. His work spans pure mathematics with links to computer science and statistical mechanics. Scientific Awards: 2018 Sloan Research Fellowship (Alfred P. Sloan Foundation) Research and Advising: Giulio Tiozzo leads an active research program supported by NSERC and the Sloan Foundation. He mentors graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, and contributes to academic life through seminars, public lectures, and participation in programs at the Fields Institute. He has delivered invited talks and lecture series internationally, including at ICTS-TIFR, ICERM, and Warwick. Labs and Teams: While not leading a formal lab, Tiozzo collaborates extensively with researchers in dynamical systems and geometry. He is involved in thematic programs at the Fields Institute, such as the 2024 program on Randomness and Geometry, and contributes to the academic community through organized seminars and collaborative research projects.
