Dr. Arun Singh serves as an Assistant Professor in the Division of Basic Biomedical Sciences and Department of Neuroscience at the Sanford School of Medicine, University of South Dakota. His research focuses on understanding the neural mechanisms underlying motor and cognitive impairments in Parkinson's disease using advanced neurophysiological techniques and neuromodulation approaches. Dr. Singh's educational background includes: Postdoctoral training in Neuroscience at Emory University (2016) Ph.D. in Neuroscience from Ludwig Maximilian University, Munich (2011) M.S. in Biotechnology from Devi Ahilya University (2006) B.S. in Biology from Bundelkhand University (2002) His research program investigates the oscillatory nature of fronto-cortical regions and associated networks in Parkinson's disease, with particular emphasis on how cerebellar and cortical oscillations relate to motor and cognitive symptoms. The Singh Lab employs EEG and non-invasive neuromodulation (TMS/tES) to study gait, balance, and cognitive control in Parkinson's patients, with special focus on freezing of gait phenomena. Current projects examine neural correlates during dual-task performance and the effects of various neuromodulation approaches on motor and cognitive function. Analysis of Dr. Singh's publication record reveals consistent focus on neural oscillations in Parkinson's disease, particularly cerebellar and cortical activity patterns during motor and cognitive tasks. His work increasingly incorporates advanced analytical approaches including graph theory and machine learning to identify biomarkers and improve diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for movement disorders. Dr. Singh's scientific contributions have been recognized with numerous awards including multiple travel awards from the Movement Disorder Society and World Parkinson Congress, a Best Publication Award from LMU Munich, and prestigious fellowships from German and Indian research organizations. Dr. Singh leads the Motor and Cognitive Control Laboratory, founded in March 2020 at USD with a second location opened in Sioux Falls in March 2023. His current research is supported by grants from the Seed for Success Foundation (2023) and Center for Brain and Behavioral Research (2021-2022). The lab actively recruits graduate students and research assistants for ongoing projects examining motor-cognitive interactions in neurodegenerative conditions using state-of-the-art neurophysiological equipment including wireless EEG, fNIRS, and neuromodulation systems.
