W. B. Worthen is the Alice Brady Pels Professor in the Arts and Professor and Chair of the Department of Theatre at Barnard College, Columbia University. He serves as Co-Chair of the PhD in Theater and Performance program, maintaining an office at MILBANK 336B, New York NY 10027, with office hours for Spring 2025 scheduled on Mondays from 3:15-4:15pm by appointment. W. B. Worthen's research focuses on Drama, Theatre, and Performance Studies with particular emphasis on European theatre traditions. His scholarly work bridges dramatic literature and performance theory, examining how textual elements interact with embodied performance practices. He has made substantial contributions to Shakespeare studies, investigating how Shakespeare's works function in contemporary performance contexts and how performance shapes our understanding of the texts. Editor of award-winning Modern Drama: Plays, Criticism, Theory Fellow of the Interweaving Performance Cultures International Research Center Former editor of Modern Drama and Theatre Journal Professor Worthen has secured significant research funding from prestigious organizations including the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Guggenheim Foundation. His editorial leadership has shaped scholarly discourse in the field through his work with leading journals. Prior to his current position, he held faculty appointments at the University of Texas at Austin, Northwestern University, the University of California at Davis and Berkeley, and the University of Michigan, and was a founding faculty member of the International Centre for Advanced Theatre Studies sponsored by the University of Helsinki, Finland. As an educator, Worthen teaches a wide range of courses in dramatic literature and performance theory and currently co-directs the PhD in Theatre and Performance program. His teaching integrates theoretical frameworks with practical performance considerations, reflecting his scholarly approach to the relationship between text and performance.
