Prof Giles Johnson is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of Manchester. His research focuses on plant responses to environmental stresses, particularly the mechanisms underlying photosynthetic efficiency and acclimation to climate change. He completed a BSc and PhD in Biochemistry at the University of Sheffield, followed by postdoctoral research in France and Germany. His lab, Plant Stress @ Manchester, investigates how plants adapt to extreme conditions through studies on reactive oxygen species, electron transport regulation, and metabolic signaling. Research interests include acclimation of photosynthesis to light and temperature fluctuations, stress tolerance in crops, and the role of Plastid Terminal Oxidase (PTOX) in photoprotection. Collaborations span metabolomics, proteomics, and systems modeling. He supervises PhD students like Dipaknashi Patel and offers opportunities in funded projects on crop resilience and environmental adaptation. Teaching includes field courses in Mallorca and urban biodiversity studies. He serves as an Associate Editor for BMC Plant Biology and participates in grants addressing sustainable agriculture and ecosystem services. His lab is affiliated with the Manchester Environmental Research Institute.
