Dr. Eduardo Martinez-Valdes is an Assistant Professor and Lecturer in Spinal and Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy at the School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences, University of Birmingham. He is based at the Centre of Precision Rehabilitation for Spinal Pain (CPR Spine), where he leads research in neuromuscular physiology and rehabilitation. University: University of Birmingham School: School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences Department: Centre of Precision Rehabilitation for Spinal Pain (CPR Spine) Position: Assistant Professor, Lecturer in Spinal and Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy Education: BSc in Physiotherapy MSc in Clinical Exercise Science, University of Potsdam, Germany PhD in Clinical Exercise Science, University of Potsdam, Germany (2017) Dr. Martinez-Valdes specializes in the neuromuscular mechanisms underlying spinal pain, muscle fatigue, and motor control. His research employs advanced techniques such as high-density surface electromyography (HDsEMG) to study motor unit behavior, neuromuscular adaptations to pain and training, and the development of novel rehabilitation interventions. He is particularly interested in how musculoskeletal pain affects motor learning and neural drive to muscles. His recent publications (2023–2025) reflect a strong focus on chronic low back pain, Achilles tendinopathy, spinal cord injury, and methodological advances in EMG and biomechanics. Key themes include spatial distribution of muscle activity, motor unit firing properties, kinematic variability, and the application of machine learning to gait analysis. His work bridges clinical rehabilitation with cutting-edge electrophysiological and biomechanical assessment. Scientific Contributions: Active member of the International Society for Electromyography and Kinesiology (ISEK) Member of the International Motoneuron Society and The Physiological Society Peer reviewer for journals including Experimental Brain Research, PLOS ONE, and Journal of Electromyography and Kinesiology Dr. Martinez-Valdes has supervised and collaborated on numerous doctoral projects and has secured funding from organizations such as MDUK, ORUK, the Physiological Society, and ANID. He teaches modules on neural adaptations to training, advanced musculoskeletal physiotherapy, and research in practice. His lab focuses on precision rehabilitation using real-time biofeedback and advanced signal processing.
