Martin Wietschel is the Head of the Department of Energy Technology and Energy Systems at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). Previously, he served as Deputy Head of the Department since 2012 and was an Adjunct Professor at KIT since 2008. He also taught at ETH Zurich from 2005–2011. His work focuses on energy systems modeling, hydrogen economy, and energy policy instruments. He studied Industrial Engineering and Management at the University of Karlsruhe (now KIT). His research spans energy transitions, sector coupling, and the integration of renewables. Notable contributions include studies on hydrogen imports, green hydrogen export strategies, and electric vehicle infrastructure. Publications emphasize techno-economic analyses, policy frameworks, and interdisciplinary approaches to energy challenges. Key areas include grid infrastructure for electrified transport, renewable energy storage, and the geopolitical dimensions of energy resources. Wietschel has coordinated projects like the HYPAT Final Report and contributed to frameworks like the German Energy Storage Roadmap. His work bridges academic research with policy implementation, addressing both technical and socio-economic aspects of sustainable energy systems.
