Finn Upham is a Researcher at the RITMO Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies in Rhythm, Time and Motion (IMV) at the University of Oslo. Their work focuses on the temporal interplay between music signals and human physiological systems, particularly audience behavior and respiratory synchronization. Upham holds a PhD in Music Technology from New York University (dissertation on respiratory phase alignment to music), along with Master’s degrees in Music Technology and a dual Bachelor’s in Music Theory and Mathematics from McGill University. Research interests include music cognition, biosensor applications in performance studies, and data science methodologies for analyzing live audience interactions. Their recent projects investigate silence-induced audience stillness, social media fan dynamics during live streams, and sensor technologies for human motion capture. Upham contributes to interdisciplinary collaborations like the MusicLab Copenhagen Dataset and has developed tools like the Respy library for respiration phase analysis. Key publications (2023–2025) explore audience behavior in both physical and virtual concert spaces, sensor comparison for motion tracking, and empirical evaluations of musical silence effects. They are affiliated with research groups such as fourMs Lab and lead initiatives like the So Strangely Podcast on Music Science and the Solo Response Project.
