Simon Joss is Professor of Urban Futures and Head of Urban Studies at the School of Social and Political Sciences, University of Glasgow. He holds a biology degree from the University of Bern and a PhD in technology policy from Imperial College London. Previously at the University of Westminster, he directed the Centre for the Study of Democracy and co-founded the International Eco-Cities Initiative. His research focuses on sustainable urban development, smart cities, and urban governance. He is associate director of the ESRC-funded Urban Big Data Centre and has advised bodies like the Wellcome Trust and the BSI Smart Cities Committee. Research interests include urban futures, eco-cities, policy analysis, and the governance of urban innovation. Recent work critiques smart city models, explores post-pandemic urban data use, and examines global sustainable urban frameworks. He has authored over 50 publications on urban sustainability and co-edited key texts like Sustainable Cities: Governing for Urban Innovation (2015). Recent grants include ESRC funding for Urban Big Data governance (2019-2023) and Leverhulme support for international eco-city comparisons. Supervised eight PhDs to completion, with current projects addressing migrant communities in Glasgow, tourism governance, and urban cycling cultures. Teaching focuses on sustainable urban futures, research methods, and urban data governance.
