Gwen E. Kirby is an Assistant Professor of English at Carleton College where she teaches creative writing and literature. She holds an MFA from Johns Hopkins University and a PhD from the University of Cincinnati. Her research interests focus on contemporary American fiction with emphasis on experimental forms, short story writing, and feminist perspectives. Kirby's work often explores unconventional narratives, playful language, and complex female characters as evidenced by her debut collection Shit Cassandra Saw which Kirkus Reviews described as having 'zany plots, unconventional forms, and playful, poetic language.' Her publications have appeared in prestigious venues including One Story , Tin House , Guernica , Mississippi Review , Ninth Letter , Blackbird , and SmokeLong Quarterly . Kirby's work demonstrates a consistent exploration of identity, gender, and narrative structure through innovative short fiction. Her notable awards include: 2018 selection for Best Small Fictions 2018 Wigleaf Top 50 2017 DISQUIET Literary Prize for Fiction Two Pushcart Prize special mentions 2018-2019 George Bennett Fellow at Phillips Exeter Academy Kirby has received writing residencies at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Vermont Studio Center, Rivendell Writers' Colony, and Sundress Academy for the Arts. She previously worked for many years at the Sewanee Writers' Conference, demonstrating her commitment to the literary community beyond her academic position.
