Dr. Ute Häussler serves as Group Leader of the Experimental Epilepsy Research unit within the Department of Neurosurgery at University Medical Center Freiburg (University of Freiburg). Holding the German academic title of Privatdozentin (equivalent to Associate Professor), she directs a research program focused on structural epilepsies including mesial temporal lobe epilepsy and focal cortical dysplasia. Her research centers on three interconnected domains: Network integration of epileptic foci in brain-wide circuits Hippocampal CA2 region dysfunction in temporal lobe epilepsy Structural plasticity mechanisms in inhibitory interneurons Employing advanced methodologies from optogenetics to human tissue analysis, her work bridges basic neuroscience with clinical applications. Recent publications demonstrate strong translational momentum, particularly in neuromodulation targets and maladaptive plasticity pathways. The consistent output in high-impact journals ( Brain , eLife , Hippocampus ) reflects robust research infrastructure and collaborative synergy within Freiburg's neuroscience ecosystem. As an active group leader, Dr. Häussler contributes to the Epilepsy Seminar series and trains next-generation researchers through hands-on projects in her lab. Her work provides critical mechanistic insights for developing targeted therapies in drug-resistant epilepsy, with particular emphasis on circuit-level interventions and structural biomarkers.
