Maria José Serol de Brito Correia serves as an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Dental Medicine of the Catholic University of Portugal (UCP) in Viseu, where she has been a faculty member since April 2001. She coordinates the first cycle of the Integrated Master's degree in Dental Medicine and teaches Molecular Genetics and Oral Microbiology courses. Her educational background includes: PhD in Biology (2001) from City University of New York (recognized by Universidade do Algarve in Biology, specialty of Microbiology) Master's degree in Biology (1996) from City University of New York Degree in Marine Biology and Fisheries (1994) from Universidade do Algarve Dr. Correia's research program focuses on the ecology of the human microbiome and its relationship with the host, with particular emphasis on salivary diagnostics. She has developed an extensive research portfolio examining the oral cavity as a diagnostic window for systemic conditions, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and autism spectrum disorders. Her work bridges basic microbiology with clinical applications, developing bioinformatic tools like OralCard and SalivaPRINT for analyzing oral biomarkers. She has established community-based research partnerships with the Senior Activity program of Viseu municipality and the Association for Developmental Disorders and Autism (APPDA)-Viseu, demonstrating her commitment to translational research that directly benefits local populations. Analysis of her publication record reveals a consistent research trajectory focused on oral microbiome characterization, salivary biomarker discovery, and computational approaches to oral health diagnostics. Her work spans fundamental microbiology studies of oral pathogens to clinical applications of salivary diagnostics, with increasing emphasis on bioinformatics tools for oral health assessment. The progression of her research shows movement from basic characterization of oral microorganisms toward sophisticated diagnostic applications using proteomics and computational biology. Dr. Correia is an active member of the Interdisciplinary Research Center in Health (CIIS) at UCP, where she contributes to the SalivaTec laboratory's mission of developing saliva-based diagnostic approaches. Her collaborative work extends across disciplines, connecting dental medicine with molecular biology, bioinformatics, and public health research.
